April 6, 2007 is a day Cherise Rogers will never forget.
It was the beginning of an average Friday, or so she thought. Twenty-five-years-old and not long out of college, she was working as a clerk typist for the Los Angeles Police Department. She just finished her shift, which ended at one in the morning.
Driving to her grandparents home along Century Boulevard in Inglewood, she noticed a police
car behind her with its lights flashing. Rogers pulled over.
Soon she will be tackled by five officers, handcuffed, pepper-sprayed and sitting in the back of a patrol car. The next four years will be consumed by 65 court appearances, trying to clear her name and regain a once bright future.
Aside from that, last month I finally had my appeal against the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) for them Wrongfully Terminating me as a Clerk Typist on January 15, 2008 behind this case full of LIES & False Allegations. As of today, I await the results & should receive them in January sometime.
NOTE: At my LAPD appeal I had 5 officers testify against me: 3 Los Angeles Sheriff Deputies, One Inglewood Police Officer & the Los Angeles Police Department Captain who fired me.
So it is quite interesting how my life quickly changed all because of POLICE LIES. Being I was new to the whole (in)justice system process, I was unaware of all the INJUSTICES that were currently going on around us everyday and it’s quite an epidemic. I have become so intrigued with the topic of justice & demanding that everyone deserves it, that I have found myself engaging in more & more community events & activities revolving around police brutality, police misconduct, & police murders. It’s time for people to stand up against the way law enforcement has been able to ruin so many INNOCENT peoples lives while they continue to move on with their lives with no discipline involved. At the rate it’s going any & everyone is susceptible to police violence!
It’s a tragic shame that the people who are supposed to Protect & Serve the community have found a way to become the enemy by means of terrorizing people by force & intimidation, falsifying reports to cover up their wrongdoings, planting evidence, unjustified homicides, illegal search & seizures, & much, much more etc. How are people supposed to have faith & trust in the Law when they clearly break it themselves? Can you answer that???
To be allowed out on bail however, the judge was reluctant to allow this to happen. For some reason he felt like this wasn’t allowed until he was provided the proof that Cherise had a right to stay of of jail pending the appeal process. Her attorney had to bring in this proof:
CA Penal Code 1272. After conviction of an offense not punishable with death, a defendant who has made application for probation or who has appealed may be admitted to bail:
2. As a matter of right, before judgment is pronounced pending application for probation in cases of misdemeanors, or when the appeal is from a judgment imposing imprisonment in cases of misdemeanors.
If her attorney would not have provided this Penal Code, the judge was going to refuse the request & mandate Cherise to serving the 60 days in the County Jail.
This appeal is stemming from the Nightmare Experience Cherise Rogers experienced on April 6, 2007.
Earlier this year Cherise R. wrote a letter to Kcal9/CBS2 news regarding a story they had reported regarding police impersonators pulling over people.
She did not agree with the advice that was given so she decided to write them a letter and see what they had to say about her concerns:
Dear Kcal 9,
I’m writing this letter in response to a story Rita Garcia reported today, February 4th, 2010, regarding 2 phony police officers pulling people over in Pasadena. Upon listening to the female officer give pointers on what to do when being pulled over by an officer, I felt like her description & details were not accurate in today’s day & time to say the least.
Being a woman who was pulled over in the middle of the night a few years back, I had a totally different experience than what this female officer describes should happen. As she makes it seem, you can simply question these officers as they approach your vehicle (real or fake), primarily the real ones. However, the police these days don’t like being questioned, particularly speaking of the inner city areas, as to which I live. All these officers/deputies DEMAND is that you cooperate with what they tell you, while you remain a voiceless being.
Speaking firsthand from experience, Yes, I was pulled over by a REAL Los Angeles County Deputy (however at the time I didn’t know that), but he simply came to my car door and asked me to step out the vehicle. Being I was alone, and it was the middle of the night (1:30 AM), I was scared for more than one reason. I simply asked him what did I do and Why I was being stopped and asked to get out the car? But he ignored my questions as if I had NO RIGHT to know why I am being asked out of the car in a bad neighborhood, with no other people around us.
So the problem I have with the female officer in this recent report is that alot of the REAL officers/deputies that are out patrolling OUR streets have an AUTHORITY issue!! They have a ‘DON’T ASK ANY QUESTIONS’ type attitude that leaves you as a civilian feeling helpless in the given event you are leary on the stop. As the female officer stated, any legitimate officer will have something to ID his agency or a name tag…..but what do you do when these REAL POLICE don’t like answering YOUR questions??? That is NOW the question I am asking???
Thanks for your Time,
Thanks for your email. We certainly understand your point of view. Law enforcement also gives the advice that in a situation such as the one you describe, to make sure you pull over in a well lit area, where there may be other people around. As for the specific incident addressed in your email, if you feel that you were not treated properly, we would advise you to file an official complaint with the LA County Sheriff’s Department.
Thanks again for your email, and thanks for watching.

Now, not too pleased with this generic reply received, Cherise wrote Mr. Button back, hoping he would understand that this is an epidemic in our community that needs to be addressed ASAP:
Thanks and I appreciate your reply back but I expected a little more than this generic reply. I have filed my complaint already with the LA Sheriff’s and have been fighting a case for nearly 3 years. Maybe if you have time you can check out my blog regarding the situation at hand. https://batteredbypd.wordpress.com
However, I wrote your station with the hopes that you will enlighten our community of the other side of Law Enforcement, the darker side. I know law enforcement gives the advice to pull over in a well lit area, but once again I’m not referring to the All American Officer as to which you are referring to. That was the MAIN point in me taking the time to write you. Also in the situation I described, there were no people around at 1:30 AM so that advice does not work all the time either.
So what I’m asking for is there to be an investigative report on this matter at hand. I see you report on helping the community on recognizing Fake law enforcement, but what about those that are the real deal, yet ABUSE their AUTHORITY??
That is what I’m asking of your station!! So let me know where you stand on that concept please?
Thanks for your time and Hopefully your concern,
After 5 days of waiting for a response from Mr. Button, Cherise wrote him again, just in case he may have OVERLOOKED the initial email:
Not sure if you didn’t get my reply email last week or if you just simply ignored it, but I have been patiently waiting on a reply. Thanks.
Mr. Button got this email & responded as such on February 10, 2010:
Ms Rogers,We will take a look at the information you forwarded us. We will contact you further if we are going to pursue this..ThanksPaul Button
Above is a picture of Head Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca & Cherise Rogers (Victim of Police Brutality at the hands of his deputies).
This picture was taken on June 7, 2010 at a Community Forum held by NAEJA (National Association for Equal Justice in America) in Compton, CA which was dealing with the topics of Police Brutality, Police Misconduct, Improving LA County’s Men’s Central Jail, etc……This was the same day Cherise had to turn herself in & bail out of jail pending the appeal she filed against her two April convictions: 2 counts of Resisting Arrest.
